Semaglutide For Weight Loss
Semaglutide is a glucagon-lite peptide-1 (GLP-1) given as a once-a-week injection that works on three areas of your body; the brain, the pancreas, and the stomach. It tells your brain that your stomach is fuller quicker and helps suppress food cravings. The pancreas decreases it’s glucagon production (hormone that increases blood sugar) and increases your insulin levels to enhance growth of ß cells in the pancreas. In the stomach, it delays gastric emptying and slows intestinal motility, which makes you feel fuller longer and helps you consume smaller meal sizes.

Is Semaglutide safe?
Semaglutide is a compounded formulation of GLP-1, glucagon-like peptide, that was approved in 2017 under the name Ozempic® as a treatment for improving glycemic control in patients with Type 2 diabetes. In June 2021, Semaglutide was approved by the FDA for non-diabetic weight loss and has been used since then to help people lose weight and keep it off. However, Semaglutide shouldn’t be taken by children under the age of 18 and should only be taken under medical supervision. Brand names are Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus.
Studies have demonstrated that Semaglutide reduced appetite, improved control of eating, and reduced food cravings in addition to improved blood sugar levels. The greatest weight loss benefits were observed when Semaglutide was used in combination with lifestyle changes, such as improved diet and consistent exercise.
Are there side effects?
As with any medical treatment, there is always a chance of minor side effects. In some patients, Semaglutide can cause minor, temporary symptoms like nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, diarrhea, tiredness, dizziness, or constipation. Initial side effects usually lessens as you continue to use Semaglutide.
Do I need to follow a particular diet while taking Semaglutide?
Not at all – there are no food restrictions with this diet! We do encourage patients to live an active lifestyle and maintain a balanced diet for optimal results.
Who is a candidate for Semaglutide?
The ideal patient would have a BMI of 30 or a BMI of 27 with co-morbidities.
Patients who are not a candidate for Semaglutide are patients who have a history of medullary thyroid cancer, and patients who have a personal or family history of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Syndrome – type 2 or those with a history of acute or chronic Pancreatitis.
